Childhood Obesity, a Plan for Action
That the Parliament notes the recent publication of the UK Governmentís plan to reduce childhood obesity, Childhood obesity: A plan for action; recognises that obesity is a health problem in Scotland and notes concern at the huge pressure that this will exert on Scotlandís health service; expresses disappointment that the plan has not taken steps to address measures that would protect children across the UK, including Scotland, from junk food marketing before the 9pm watershed; understands that a wide range of health experts have condemned the plan as a missed opportunity; believes that key organisations, including Cancer Research UK and Obesity Action Scotland, are urging the Scottish Government to go further in its forthcoming diet and obesity strategy, and supports them in this.
The Dundee Academy of Sport
That the Parliament supports the work of the Dundee Academy of Sport, which is a partnership between Abertay University and Dundee & Angus College; believes that it is an example of what can be achieved through innovative partnerships between the higher and further education sectors; congratulates it on having worked with 22,000 attendees from 81 primary and secondary schools across Tayside and Fife and engaging them in various learning through sport initiatives; believes that this approach encourages those who might otherwise not be attracted to further and higher education to consider continuing their studies and helps develops a strong community workforce for the sport and leisure industry, and urges the Scottish Government, Scottish Funding Council and other bodies to continue to support the academy in its excellent work.
